Throughout history, Hideo Kojima has produced games that told depthful stories about humanity, conspiracy, and the unknown. Taking place in settings ranging from a jungle in the 1970′s to an off-planet mechanized colony, each of his creations has soul, and a unique personality. Lately it would seem that his mystique has worn thin, especially as seen with kotaku.com

There are at least three possibilities for the new title Hideo Kojima is working on.

1. A new Zone of The Enders game.

Zone of The Enders is a franchise that dates back to the Playstation 2 era. The game revolves around a character named Leo Stenbruck, an accidental hero who stumbles upon an orbital frame, an advanced mechanized suit of unknown origin or age. Using this giant machine, Leo is well equipped to battle the sinister BAHRAM army. Fast paced and full of intense firefights, Zone of The Enders was one of the best reviewed sci fi games on the Playstation 2, and is widely considered to be among the best sci fi mech shooters of all time. Fans of the series have been begging for a remake or sequel for years, and Kojima has expressed interest in returning to the series at some point in the future. Again, the man has mystique.

2. Metal Gear Solid 5

When Metal Gear Solid 4 hit store shelves in 2008, gamers worldwide rejoiced after discovering that the title was a fitting end to the inspiring and complex reign of Solid Snake. After selling more than 5 million copies, and winning an incredible number of game of the year awards, Hideo Kojima’s masterwork is full of cinematic detail, and new video game mechanics and techniques. MGS4 helped not only redefine the stealth action genre, but was integral to defining the Playstation 3 as well. Metal Gear Solid 5 would be a continuation of Kojima’s tradition of innovation.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising will be released shortly for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Focusing on the cyborg-like life of a key character from the Metal Gear series, Raiden, the game will be a lightning fast action title, a dramatic departure from previous Metal Gear Solid games. Since the game features a side character from the series, is a multi-platform game, doesn’t have a number after it, and isn’t being directed by Hideo Kojima himself, there is very little likelihood that MGS: Rising is the true sequel to MGS4.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was released for the PSP, was directed by Hideo Kojima, and featured a storyline that took place between Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Hideo Kojima has called the game the ” true sequel” to MGS4, but there is a lot of skepticism about whether he would conclude such a massive franchise on a handheld device.

3. A new IP

While it may sound outlandish, there was once a time when Metal Gear Solid was just a glimmer in Hideo Kojima’s eye. Just as he created Zone of The Enders for the Playstation 2, Kojima may very well be hard at work on a brand new IP for the Playstation 3. His allegience to the platform has been steadfast, especially considering the fact that Metal Gear Solid 4 wound up to be one of the few third party titles that did not go multiplatform during the year of MGS4′s release. There is always the possibility that Kojima Productions is tired of creating storylines for Solid Snake, and would rather try their hand at something new.

What is your theory?

Do you think the next Hideo Kojima game will be...
